BoatBeacon (a company with some brilliant marine telematics capabilities) are rapidly expanding their AIS base station coverage and utilising Digital Yacht AIS products for exceptional performance. A recent installation in Benidorm shows that not all AIS receivers perform the same. The picture below shows previous coverage using a 3rd party AIS.
They then upgraded to a Digital Yacht AIS receiver and the performance improvements are dramatic – an 8 fold increase in data received and over 4 times as many ships all from the same location and antenna. You’ll notice too how ATONs and AIS base stations are correctly decoded by all Digital Yacht receivers
You can also see the dramatic increase in data traffic in the graph below when the new receiver was turned on at 2:10pm. Digital Yacht – better AIS solutions.
Earlier this week, a customer asked us if we had a video that showed how to use our proAIS2 Configuration and Diagnostics Software that we supply with our latest Class B AIS Transponders. Rather embarrassingly we had to say that we did not, but we promised to create one and here it is.
Digital Yacht are not the only company that supply proAIS2 with transponders, but to our knowledge, we are the only company to produce a video showing how to configure and diagnose Class B transponders with it. So we hope that not only Digital Yacht users but owners of other brands will benefit from this video.
The video is hosted and can be found on YouTube, but you might prefer to watch this video and others, on our Digital Yacht TV site…
Its always good to have a few weeks at boat shows and listen to customer questions. Differences between models always crop up as Digital Yacht have a big selection of Class B AIS transponders on offer. We hope this document helps you decide which is best for your installation. All units share a common technology platform so will give excellent performance and importantly have future proof SatTrak technology built in.
All AIS transponders require their own dedicate internal GPS (you can’t use a NMEA feed from an existing GPS). The AIT1500 series has a super sensitive internal antenna which cuts down on the need for another external antenna. It will work well even below decks on GRP vessels but steel or wood will attenuate the signal too much. The AIT1500 series is therefore great for RIBs, Center Consoles and GRP sail boats. With many larger sail boats now fitting multi function displays in the cockpit, it can be unobtrusively installed in a location adjacent to the MFD and the same for flybridge motor boats.
The AIT1500 comes in two versions – one for NMEA 0183 based systems and one for NMEA 2000 systems. The later is also self powered from the NMEA 2000 bus so installation really is plug ‘n play. Both models have a USB interface for PC & MAC for programming and PC plotting.
Has dual NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 interfaces plus USB and ships with a dedicated external GPS antenna. Its a great solution for wooden and steel vessels that require an external GPS antenna
Appropriately called “Nucleus” as it forms a hub in any marine electronics system. It features our patented ZeroLoss VHF antenna splitter technology so the main VHF antenna can be shared with VHF and AIS which means no need for another VHF antenna and sophisticated connectivity including not just NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 but also WiFi for iPad and tablet interfacing. Up to 7 wifi connected devices can be attached and neat NMEA interfacing allows instrument, AIS and GPS data to be used by hundreds of compatible apps. There’s also a FM radio antenna outlet.
Here’s a 5 minute guide on Youtube and of course we’re standing by on email and phone to answer any queries. Digital Yacht – for your biggest and best choice in Class B AIS.

We have just updated our “Best Marine Apps for Android” list to include the some important new Apps now available on Android devices. The actual number of apps has only slightly increased since our last update, iRegatta a popular racing app has been withdrawn from the Play Store, while the popular Transas iSailor App is now available on Android. Featuring the same Transas charts that you find on many commercial ships and a host of powerful features, iSailor is definitely an app to consider for any Android user.
Another very important new entrant on the list, is the Android version of the hugely popular OpenCPN app. OpenCPN was developed by the open source community and is the most popular navigation program for Windows, LINUX and Macs. Now this new Android App, is set to become equally popular on Tablets and Phones, although it does need a fairly powerful processor and an SD Card slot is also useful to make it easier to load the charts on. For more information visit http://bigdumboat.com/aocpn/forum
Our “Best Marine Apps” list focuses on navigational apps that can be used with our wireless NMEA and AIS products and as long as the App you are interested in has a tick in the “External NMEA” column then it will work with our wireless NMEA products. With nine wireless NMEA products in our range, it can sometimes be confusing for customers, as to which product they need, so we have just published a comparison sheet to make it easier to choose the best product for your application, click here to read it.
We are fairly confident that we have captured most of the popular apps currently available. However, if you are a user or developer of a good marine navigation app for Android that is not on our list, please let us know and we will get you on the list at the next update.
If you are interested in Digital Yacht’s popular AISView app for Android devices, you can learn more about it by clicking here.

We’re often asked for compatible AIS antennas, mounting accessories and connectors for use with our range of products so the latest AIS Antenna & Accessory Guide is now available to download. Just click on the image below.
It’s not just AIS products either – we’ve accessories for our wifi products too that will prove prove popular with users of our WL70 wifi antenna. Many boaters want to rail mount the antenna when in port and stow away below decks while sailing. The PA41 detachable rail mount makes installation a breeze.
The PA82 can also be used as a mast mount for the DTV100 DTV antenna
There’s lots of possibilities here for the best, professional installation. Just drop us a line or call if you need to order any parts (Europe + 44 1179 554474 or US 978 277 1234)
AISnet+ is a new enhanced version of our popular AISnet AIS base station receiver. Both models will continue to be available but AISnet+ features some new, unique interfacing capabilities.
Both devices are fitted with a network/RJ45 interface. They are designed for installation on shore side facilities such as ports, marinas or platforms for connection to the internet via a suitable router. Local AIS traffic decoded by the AISnet receiver can then be sent to AIS internet providers such as Marine Traffic and AISLive.
The new AISnet+ device brings new connectivity options with a sophisticated internal router allowing for Open VPN connections and wireless connectivity as well as via a LAN cable. Like the AISnet receiver, it has also has a USB interface for a local PC or MAC. Open VPN allows for secure AISnet to server communications for high reliability and security – its ideal for military applications.
AISnet+uses the very latest generation, high sensitivity dual channel AIS receiver for the best possible receiver performance. Both Class A and Class B transmissions are fully decoded including ATONs, SARTs and other specialist AIS signals. Indicator lights are now built in showing receiver and network status.
AISnet+ ships with a 110/220V AC adaptor (with universal plug adaptors for global markets) and a simple to use configuration application/CD for both PC and MAC. It can also be powered from 12V DC. It is available now priced at £1000 plus VAT where applicable ($1600/EUR1400)
