Next Generation Instrument Solution From Digital Yacht & Seamantec

Here’s a new solution for next generation instrumentation on your boat.  When we designed WindSense, our wireless wind system, we thought most users would utilise mobile devices like iPhones and tablets as a display but it turns out many users also wanted to integrate into a PC system – this makes sense as you can have a large format screen at the chart table or below deck and use mobile devices around the yacht.

Our SmarterTrack chart navigation software provides nice large digital displays of instrument data (as below) so this was one solution but it is primarily designed for chart navigation, AIS, routing and real time nav.  Its worth noting it uses Navionics charting and a unique feature is that traditional chart data stored on Navionics cartridges as used in many chart plotters can be utilised with SmarterTrack too – saving the data on the PC hard drive and minimising charting costs.

SmarterTrack New Instrument Displays

Looking for other solutions we discovered Seamantec and their EDO PC based instrument system.  It can read data from any of Digital Yacht’s wireless NMEA interfaces and also directly from iKommunicate, the NMEA 2000 and 0183 gateway.  It also works with any of our NMEA 0183 sensors.  The display screen is easily configurable for just about any configuration – move the instruments around, choose from analogue or digital format and select “pages” of instrument information to suit exactly what you want and when.  There’s even a mini AIS plotter display

Another neat feature is the Seamantec back ground can be turned off so you’re just left with an instrument display which can be floated over another program – you can see below Seamantec instruments overlaid on top of SmarterTrack.  You can also stack windows side by side just as with any Windows program and take advantage of a big PC screen.

Things get really exciting for the racing sailor with Seamantec offering really sophisticated wind displays and the ability to display and calculate boat polar tables like the screen shot below shows

Plus there’s logging and recording of NMEA data, voice alarms, a logbook and lots of real time performance analysis.

So we’re impressed and are offering a bundle of our Aqua Compact Pro PC, iKommunicate and SmaretrTrack plus Seamantec EDO software preinstalled at a special bundle price of $1595.00 – just add monitor, mouse and keyboard and you’ve a powerful navigation and instrument system for any exiting NMEA 0183/2000 network.  Drop us a mail to for more information

SmarterTrack 2015 Now Shipping

Lenovo Tablet with SmarterTrack

A new version of our popular Windows Navigation Software SmarterTrack 2015 has now been released.

With added support for the powerful TheyR weather service, full compatibility with the latest Windows 8 Tablets (using the tablets internal GPS) and other smaller updates and improvements, SmarterTrack 2015 is the perfect navigation software for anyone with an existing Navionics based chart plotter.

Users can copy their existing chart cartridges to the PC’s hard drive (free of charge) and avoid having to buy a duplicate set of charts or have the cartridge permanently plugged in to the PC, which is so often the case with other PC navigation software. Routes and Waypoints created on SmarterTrack can be copied to the chart cartridge and then loaded in to the dedicated chart plotter.

SmarterTrack 2015 costs £250+VAT and existing users can update for £25+VAT. A demo version of SmarterTrack 2015 is available to download here.

Using Navionics+ Charts on SmarterTrack 2014

Navionics+ Package

Our latest SmarterTrack 2014 navigation software for PCs is an ideal planning and backup navigation tool for all owners of a dedicated Chart Plotter that uses Navionics charts, as you can copy the charts from your Navionics cartridge on to your PC’s hard drive and avoid having to buy additional charts for your PC.

For anyone that does not already have Navionics charts, SmarterTrack is still a very powerful navigation software package, with very good AIS support, tidal planning, weather GRIB file overlay and excellent support for route and waypoint transfer between the PC and other Navionics based chart plotters.

For SmarterTrack 2014, we recommend the new Navionics+ charts which have all of the latest chart data and cover quite large areas. What is more, you get 12 months of free updates and access to the Sonar charts which provide extra bathymetric data than the normal navigation charts and are ideal for fishing and diving.

A Navionics+ chart pack costs around £199 inc. VAT and for this price you get a very large portfolio of charts, for example the UK+Holland chart area, covers the whole of the UK, Ireland, North France and Benelux regions.

In the pack you get a blank SD or CF cartridge (depending upon the pack you buy) and a USB cartridge reader. The blank cartridge has a unique encrypted file on it, called an “nTag” file, that when registered online can have all of the latest chart data downloaded on to it.

To make it easy for SmarterTrack customers, we have produced a new Tech Note that gives you a step by step guide to using Navionics charts and includes some useful links to instructional videos from Navionics and ourselves. To download a copy of the new Tech Note, please click here.

Digital Yacht launch GPS150 USB DualNav GPS/GLONASS sensor for PCs and MACs

Digital Yacht launch GPS150 USB DualNav GPS/GLONASS sensor for PCs and MACs

Digital Yacht has introduced a new variant of their DualNav GPS and GLONASS positioning sensor which utilises a USB interface for both data and power allowing direct connection to a PC or MAC.  Called the GPS150USB, it’s designed for a growing group of boat owners who use a PC or MAC for electronic charting and navigation rather than a traditional plotter. There’s now a great selection of navigation software available including Digital Yacht’s SmarterTrack program which can utilise popular Navionic’s charts.  It’s also ideal for use by charter skippers who want a self-contained, plug ‘n’ sail navigation solution.

DualNav is Digital Yacht’s proprietary technology which utilises GPS and the Russian funded GLONASS satellite systems for enhanced positioning.  GLONASS is now global and operational 24 hours per day and like GPS, is free to use. By combining the signal from the two satellite systems you’ll get double reliability and also sub 1m accuracy from this new HD positioning sensor.  The sensor can also be programmed to output data at 10Hz for smoother chart positioning and enhanced course and speed updates.  It’s self-powered from the computers USB port which makes installation easy with no additional power required.  With a sensitive 50 channel receiver design, it will work below decks on GRP boats and comes with a 5m cable for direct connection to the PC or MAC.  Drivers are supplied for both operating systems.  The GPS150USB is available now and is priced at £165 plus vat.
